Outdoor Bathroom

How to Build a Latrine:
  1. Dig a hole in the ground that is fairly deep(Half an arm to an arms length).
  2. For comfort, you can use a A-frame support to create a seat to hover above the hole or just use a fallen log.
  3. Cover it with a lid of some sort to not attract animals.
  4. If necessary, build walls for privacy.
  5. Bury when nearing full and dig another hole.
In the winter, digging into the snow should suffice, but if the snow is not deep, I suggest lighting a fire. Then, once the fire has softened the ground, try digging then repeat with the fire if necessary. Also, never dig a latrine near a water source; the waste could contaminate it. If it is not a long term latrine, dig and bury a new hole for each time-never just go on the ground.
Please note this does not apply to camping. Some places have a "leave nothing behind" rule if you get my meaning, so consider buying a portable latrine otherwise you could be fined.

Cleaning:
  • Water. You have seen or heard of those toilets that spray your bottom, right? Well, if you have a water bottle with a nozzle, squeeze it and spray.
  • Cloth. Believe it or not, some people do this to save trees. All they do is use a cloth to wipe, then wash the cloth just like reusable diapers. Do not clean directly in your water source.
  • Snow. Though packed it in your hands to make it firm first(snowball like).
  • Smooth sticks, fir cones, firm cattail heads, old mans beard, aspen leaves, the bottom of Thimple berry leaves, and smooth rocks can all be used. Generally, if you can eat it, it should be safe for your lower regions. If the leaves you are using are small, pile more than one on top of each other to keep them from taring.
You can combine methods if you so wish.
